The John Annesley Company has products that are used by art conservators worldwide. Products popular with art restorers include:

  • Expansion bolt stretcher bars - Also called "museum bars", our expansion bolt stretchers can be ordered to exact size in any fraction of inches or centimeters. Plus they can be customized even further (see pictures below).

  • Regular Stretcher Bars - At just 3/4" it's our thinnest profile available while the basswood still maintains some integrity and strength. All braces are mortised and tenon, it's a wood keyed system. The product was designed especially for re-stretching artwork where the barest minimum of fabric on the sides is available.

  • Unprimed linen fabric- We have linen fabric up to 120" wide, and can provide small to huge pieces.

  • Polyester fabric- Used for re-lining paintings, conservators glue an old, delicate canvas onto to a pre-stretched piece of polyester. Then they don't have to worry about buckling or crinkling the paint. The polyester fabric creates a moisture proof buffer between the stretchers and the wall that will last forever.

  • Canvas Pliers- When re-stretching delicate art our canvas pliers make the job so much easier.

  • Customized Turnbuckles- These allow conservators to make careful adjustments of wood-keyed stretcher bars.
  • Services for Conservators

We purposefully create oblique and unusual expansion bolt stretcher bars to meet the needs of art conservators. In the picture, notice how far 'out of square' this traditional wood-key stretcher is. Conservators supply us with a template (mylar tracing) of existing bars and we make new basswood stretchers that conform to the original contours of older paintings, even severe parallelograms or uneven shapes.

This is a back view of a panel with an expandable collar. The panel's joints are rigid, but the collar is a traditional wood keyed stretcher attached with expansion bolt hardware to the panel, giving precise expansion and contraction of the perimeter. The panel and collar are kept in plane with a brass or aluminum spline.

This "museum bar" stretcher was made for conservation use. Each half of each corner is independently expandable using the precise hardware found in our standard expansion bolt stretchers.
